Futsal Clinic Debuts in Dulag, Inspiring Youth through Play and Teamwork

The kick off session for the Futsal Clinic under the “Girls Got This” initiative successfully took place on Saturday, September 14, 2024. The event was held at two separate national high schools in Dulag, Leyte - Dulag National High School and Cabacungan National High School -  and was attended by one hundred and fourteen highly vulnerable adolescent  girls and non-binary participants eager to learn the sport. This was the first time a Futsal clinic was organized by FundLife in the municipality.

The session lasted for three hours in the morning and started with icebreaker activities, a warm-up session, and an orientation facilitated by FundLife Youth Mentors. In the orientation, the girls learned about FundLife, the Girls Got This initiative, and their inherent rights as children. They were also introduced to the principles that FundLife upholds, including the belief that no child should be left behind in pursuing quality education and that young people should realize their full potential.

Once everything was set, the girls were assigned groups and immersed in fun and engaging activities to build camaraderie and teamwork. They also formed teams and chose the names they would represent during their regular futsal sessions. The girls expressed excitement and anticipation for the event.

In an interview, Althea, 16,  one of the participants said, “ Based on my observation of today’s session, everyone really participated. I hope that we can form genuine and unexpected friendships.” When asked what her expectations are for the following sessions, Trishalyn, 16, added, “I also want to make friends and learn a lot with the other girls. And, I expect that we can go far with our games where we get to win tournaments and give honor to our school.”

As a part of championing inclusivity and diversity, non-binary participants were also welcomed to the activity. “I thought males would be separated from this event but I am very happy that I got to join,” said Gian, a student at Dulag NHS, after attending the day’s session.

The event ended with the distribution of snacks and discussions of the next session next Saturday, September 21. Some participants mentioned that they live far from the schools and transportation is a challenge. FundLife will be working alongside Dulag’s local government to address this. Regular weekly sessions will be scheduled as a part of their after-school activity on weekdays after further consultations.
